Ohio County Courthouses Symposium to be Held in May
By Stephanie Beougher - March 27, 2014
County courthouses feature prominently in county seats throughout Ohio, with more than 60 of them listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
These historic structures will be the focus of a symposium on May 15 and 16.
"The purpose behind having this Ohio County Courthouses Symposium is to really get a dialogue going about our historical courthouses - why they're valuable to the community, what the community can do to preserve them - and to bring the stakeholders together like the judges, county commissioners, and the public to talk about these great resources we have in our counties and what we can do to preserve them," said Ohio Supreme Court Assistant Administrative Director Mindi Wells.
The event will include discussions about court security and economic development.
Hosted by the Supreme Court of Ohio, the County Commissioners Association of Ohio, the Ohio Historical Society, Heritage Ohio, AIA Columbus, and others, the event coincides with the 10th anniversary of the restoration of the Thomas J. Moyer Ohio Judicial Center.
Chief Justice Maureen O'Connor will give the keynote address on the evening of May 15 at the Ohio Judicial Center. Sessions will be held the following day at the Columbus Athenaeum.
Details about the symposium are available at the County Commissioners Association of Ohio website ccao.org/ohio-courthouses-symposium.
