Supreme Court of Ohio Admission to the Bar
Ohio Supreme Court Justice Evelyn Lundberg Stratton gave the keynote speech to the 193 new lawyers who successfully passed the February 2012 bar examination and were sworn in at the bar admissions ceremony that took place Monday at The Ohio Theatre in Columbus.
Chief Justice Maureen O’Connor gave the opening remarks at the bar admissions ceremony, and Justice Terrence O’Donnell administered the oath of office to those who successfully passed the examination and who satisfied all of the Ohio Supreme Court’s other requirements for admission.
“However you got here in your personal journey, this is the best opportunity – your ticket to something untold in your future,” said Justice Stratton.
Justice Stratton gave the new lawy
ers three important principles to follow in their careers: to give back by either doing pro bono work or volunteering to work in their community, to keep their balance between work and family life, and to make sure that their client is more important than winning or money.
New attorney Christopher Baxter received congratulations from his proud family following the ceremony at a reception at the Thomas J. Moyer Ohio Judicial Center. He is a graduate from Cleveland-Marshall College of Law, and he said Justice Stratton’s speech moved him.
“I think often times we do focus on ourselves as attorneys and even as human beings, but I think it gave inspiring words to all future attorneys practicing law and knowing it’s about your client, it’s about serving the public, so hearing those words just reinforce my value to do good work and be a great attorney,” said Baxter.
The Ohio Bar Examination was administered in Columbus on February 28 through March 1. Of the 387 applicants, 250 received passing scores and 193 walked the stage on May 14 with their certificates of admission to the practice of law.
The Ohio State Bar Association hosted the reception where the new lawyers were able to register to practice in the state of Ohio for the first time.
Law school graduates from The Ohio State University, Capital University, Northern Kentucky University, Case Western Reserve University, Cleveland State University and Ohio Northern University as well as the University of Cincinnati, University of Dayton, University of Akron, University of Toledo and those from out-of-state schools participated in the bar admissions ceremonies.
