>> A FINAL REVIEW OF THE TOP
00:00:23RACES ON THE 2014 BALLOT.
AND A TRIP BACK IN TIME TO AN
00:00:25ICONIC COLUMBUS RESTAURANT.
THIS WEEK IN "THE STATE OF
00:00:27OHIO."
>> OVER THE LAST TWO MONTHS,
00:00:36I'VE TALKED WITH NINE OF THE TEN
MAJOR PARTY CANDIDATES FOR THE
00:00:39FIVE STATEWIDE EXECUTIVE OFFICES
ON THE 2014 BALLOT.
00:00:41THIS WEEK, WE'LL REVIEW SOME
HIGHLIGHTS OF THOSE INTERVIEWS.
00:00:45I TALKED WITH REPUBLICAN
INCUMBENT MIKE DEWINE AND
00:00:49DEMOCRATIC CHALLENGER DAVID
PEPPER FOR OUR FIRST SHOW OF
00:00:53SEPTEMBER.
BUT TWO ISSUES HAVE COME UP IN
00:00:56CAMPAIGN ADS SINCE THEN ONE IS
THE BACKLOG OF UNTESTED RAPE
00:00:59KITS.
DEWINE SAYS SINCE HIS OFFICE
00:01:01STARTED THE PROGRAM TO TEST
THOSE KITS, IT'S TAKEN IN 8200
00:01:04KITS AND TESTED MORE THAN HALF
OF THEM AND GOT HITS TO LIKELY
00:01:07SUSPECTS IN A THIRD OF THOSE.
>> SINCE I'VE TAKEN OFFICE,
00:01:13WE'VE HAD A FOUR--FOLD INCREASE
IN WORKLOAD.
00:01:19WE'VE TAKEN THAT BACKLOG FROM
125 DAYS TO AN AVERAGE OF 22 OR
00:01:2423 DAYS, AND WE CAN TURN A CASE
AROUND IN 24 HOURS.
00:01:37>> BUT PEPPER SAYS IF MORE KITS
AND RESOURCES WERE SHARED WITH
00:01:40CRIME LABS AROUND THE STATE, THE
BACKLOG COULD BE HANDLED MORE
00:01:42QUICKLY.
>> RIGHT NOW HE'S ONLY ABLE TO
00:01:44TEST 300 A MONTH.
SO I GIVE HIM CREDIT FOR
00:01:45BEGINNING THE TESTING, BUT I
DON'T GIVE HIM CREDIT FOR NOT
00:01:48MANAGING THIS PROCESS WELL.
IT'S TAKING FAR TOO LONG.
00:01:50WE KNOW THAT IT'S WORKING SO
LET'S SPEED IT UP.
00:01:57>> PEPPER HAS BEEN ON THE
OFFENSIVE FOR MOST OF THIS
00:01:59CAMPAIGN.
HE ACCUSES DEWINE REWARDING
00:02:01DONORS WHO'VE GIVEN MILLIONS TO
HIS CAMPAIGN AND TO THE
00:02:03REPUBLICAN PARTY WITH LUCRATIVE
DEBT--COLLECTION CONTRACTS,
00:02:06OFTEN BY RIGGING BIDS AND
FUDGING BUSINESS RECORDS.
00:02:08>> THIS IS THE OFFICE IN OHIO,
MORE THAN ANY OTHER, THAT'S
00:02:10SUPPOSED TO BE CRACKING DOWN ON
CORRUPTION AND CALLING OUT PAY
00:02:14TO PLAY AND DEMANDING INTEGRITY
IN GOVERNMENT, AND IT'S BREAKING
00:02:17ALL THE RULES.
>> DEWINE SAYS THOSE CHARGES ARE
00:02:24TOTALLY IRRESPONSIBLE AND THAT
HIS OFFICE IS FOLLOWING THE LAW.
00:02:26>> THERE'S NO SECRET ABOUT WHO
GETS BUSINESS.
00:02:29THERE'S NO SECRET ABOUT WHO
GIVES MONEY.
00:02:30IT'S ALL PUBLISHED.
THERE'S NO WAY THAT ANYBODY
00:02:33GIVING MONEY TO MY CAMPAIGN, ANY
MORE THAN WOULD FOR ANYBODY
00:02:36ELSE, THAT THAT IMPACTS WHAT
PEOPLE GET BUSINESS.
00:02:46>> THE SECOND SHOW OF SEPTEMBER
FEATURED THE CANDIDATES FOR
00:02:48SECRETARY OF STATE, REPUBLICAN
INCUMBENT JON HUSTED AND
00:02:50DEMOCRATIC CHALLENGER NINA
TURNER.
00:02:52BOTH HAVE SIMPLE STATEMENTS
ABOUT VOTING HUSTED SAYS IT
00:02:54SHOULD BE EASY TO VOTE AND HARD
TO CHEAT, AND TURNER SAYS IT
00:02:57SHOULD BE SIMPLE, ACCESSIBLE AND
SECURE.
00:02:59THEY AGREE THAT THE REDRAWING OF
LAWMAKERS' DISTRICT LINES HAS
00:03:03CREATED GRIDLOCK AND
HYPERPARTISANSHIP, AND THEY
00:03:05AGREE THERE'S NO NEED FOR A
STRICT VOTER PHOTO ID LAW.
00:03:10BUT THAT'S ABOUT IT.
THEY DISAGREE STRONGLY ON RULES
00:03:23ABOUT EARLY VOTING.
HUSTED FOUGHT AGAINST A COURT
00:03:30RULING THAT PRESERVED THE
SO--CALLED "GOLDEN WEEK" AND
00:03:32THREW OUT HIS ORDER FOR UNIFORM
VOTING HOURS AND DAYS.
00:03:34>> THAT'S NOT EQUAL PROTECTION.
THAT'S NOT TREATING VOTERS
00:03:37FAIRLY AND EQUALLY.
IT HAS THE POTENTIAL TO CREATE A
00:03:39VERY UNFAIR PLAYING FIELD
SOMETHING THAT WE TRIED TO GET
00:03:41AWAY FROM.
THE GOAL FOR ME IS TO MAKE SURE
00:03:43THAT ALL VOTERS VOTE BY THE SAME
SET OF RULES IN OHIO, DURING THE
00:03:45SAME HOURS, DURING THE SAME DAYS
THAT'S WHAT I'M AFTER.
00:03:47HUSTED APPEALED THAT RULING AND
WON.
00:03:50TURNER SAID HUSTED SPENT
$400,000 ON LEGAL BATTLES OVER
00:03:51VOTING LAWS, AND SHE SAID SHE
WOULDN'T BE COMPELLED TO DEFEND
00:03:54LAWS SHE FELT WERE WRONG.
>> YES, I HAVE TO UPHOLD THE
00:04:04LAWS, BUT I WOULD CERTAINLY -
ANY LAW THAT WAS PROPOSED BY
00:04:06LEGISLATORS, AND BEING ONE OF
THEM RIGHT NOW, AND I HAVE
00:04:08RELATIONSHIPS ACROSS THE AISLE
I WOULD LOBBY THE LEGISLATURE TO
00:04:11SEE IT FROM A DIFFERENT ANGLE.
I BELIEVE IT WOULD BE MY
00:04:14OBLIGATION AS THE CHIEF
ELECTIONS OFFICER, THAT ANY LAWS
00:04:16THAT ARE INTRODUCED AND VOTED
UPON THAT TAKE AWAY ACCESS TO
00:04:19THE BALLOT BOX, THAT I NEED TO
SPEAK UP AND MR. HUSTED HAS NOT
00:04:23DONE THAT.
>> TURNER SUPPORTS A DEMOCRATIC
00:04:29PUSH FOR A VOTER'S BILL OF
RIGHTS IN THE OHIO CONSTITUTION,
00:04:40BUT HUSTED SAID SOME OF THE
ISSUES ARE ADDRESSED ELSEWHERE
00:04:42IN THE CONSTITUTION, AND OTHER
SPECIFICS OF THAT PROPOSAL DON'T
00:04:44MAKE SENSE FOR OHIO.
REPUBLICANS HAVE CRITICIZED
00:04:47TURNER AS BEING TOO PARTISAN TO
BE THE CHIEF ELECTIONS OFFICER,
00:04:50AND HUSTED SAYS HER POSITIONS
ARE WELL KNOWN.
00:04:52>> I'VE ALWAYS PRIDED MYSELF,
EVEN THOUGH I'M A REPUBLICAN, OF
00:04:53TRYING TO MAKE SURE THAT I
UPHOLD THE CONSTITUTION, UPHOLD
00:04:56THE LAW.
PARTY AFFILIATION COMES LAST,
00:05:03NOT FIRST - I THINK THAT'S THE
DIFFERENCE.
00:05:10>> TURNER FREELY ADMITS SHE'S
STRONGLY PRO-CHOICE AND THAT SHE
00:05:18CAMPAIGNED AGAINST COLLECTIVE
BARGAINING LAW CHANGES, BUT SAID
00:05:20HER CAMPAIGN FOR SECRETARY OF
STATE HASN'T BEEN OVERLY
00:05:22POLITICAL.
>> I'M NOT STANDING HERE SAYING,
00:05:24KAREN, I WANT TO EXPAND AND
PROTECT THAT RIGHT FOR
00:05:26DEMOCRATS.
I'M SAYING I WANT TO EXPAND AND
00:05:27PROTECT THAT RIGHT NO MATTER HOW
PEOPLE LEAN - WHETHER THEY'RE A
00:05:35LITTLE RED, A LITTLE BLUE, A
LITTLE COUNTRY, A LITTLE ROCK
00:05:37AND ROLL, A LITTLE R&B I WANT
PEOPLE TO BE ABLE TO VOTE.
00:05:44>> THE THIRD WEEK OF SEPTEMBER,
I TALKED WITH THE CANDIDATES FOR
00:05:45AUDITOR OF STATE, REPUBLICAN
INCUMBENT DAVID YOST AND
00:05:47DEMOCRATIC CHALLENGER JOHN
PATRICK CARNEY.
00:05:49NEITHER YOST NOR CARNEY IS A
CERTIFIED PUBLIC ACCOUNTANT - IN
00:05:57FACT, THEY'RE BOTH LAWYERS.
AND BOTH HAVE CONCERNS ABOUT
00:06:09JOBSOHIO. YOST SAYS HE STOOD UP
TO HIS FELLOW REPUBLICANS AND
00:06:11GOV.
JOHN KASICH IN ISSUING A
00:06:13SUBPOENA SO HE COULD AUDIT
JOBSOHIO, BUT CARNEY SAYS HE
00:06:15DIDN'T FIGHT HARD ENOUGH.
ON CHARTER SCHOOLS, CARNEY SAYS
00:06:17YOST IS LETTING THEM SLIDE
BECAUSE CHARTER SCHOOL OPERATORS
00:06:19HAVE DONATED THOUSANDS OF
DOLLARS TO HIS CAMPAIGN.
00:06:21>> ECOT'S DIRECTOR, BILL LAGER,
HAD MADE SUBSTANTIAL
00:06:23CONTRIBUTIONS TO MR. YOST.
WHITE HAT MANAGEMENT, DAVID
00:06:25BRENNAN'S COMPANY, HAD MADE
SUBSTANTIAL CONTRIBUTIONS TO MR.
00:06:27YOST.
AND UNFORTUNATELY, IT APPEARS
00:06:33THAT THE TAXPAYERS AREN'T BEING
WELL-REPRESENTED ---- THAT
00:06:35CONTRIBUTORS ARE BEING
WELL--REPRESENTED BUT THE
00:06:37TAXPAYERS AREN'T.
BUT YOST SAYS HE'S BEEN MORE
00:06:39AGGRESSIVE ON CHARTER SCHOOLS
THAN ANY AUDITOR IN HISTORY, AND
00:06:41THAT HALF OF THE AUDITS SAYING
THE STATE SHOULD BE PAID BACK
00:06:43HAVE BEEN AGAINST CHARTER
SCHOOLS.
00:06:45>> OVER HALF OF THE FINDINGS FOR
RECOVERY THAT MY OFFICE HAS
00:06:47ISSUED IN THE LAST FOUR YEARS
HAVE BEEN AGAINST CHARTER
00:06:49SCHOOLS.
EVERY CHARTER SCHOOL ALREADY
00:06:51GETS AN AUDIT.
SO THIS NOTION THAT WE'RE NOT
00:06:57WORKING ON IT IS JUST FLAT-OUT,
NOT EVEN REMOTELY CLOSE TO THE
00:06:59FACTS.
>> AND WHILE THEY AGREE THAT
00:07:04CHANGES NEED TO BE MADE IN THE
LAWS GOVERNING THE DRAWING OF
00:07:06DISTRICT LINES FOR LAWMAKERS,
THEY LAY THE BLAME FOR THE
00:07:08CURRENT MAPS WHICH MANY CRITICS
HAVE CALLED GERRYMANDERED ----
00:07:11AT EACH OTHER'S FEET.
YOST SAYS DEMOCRATS, INCLUDING
00:07:26CARNEY, COULD HAVE CHANGED THE
RULES IN 2010, BUT GAMBLED THAT
00:07:27THEY WOULD RETAIN CONTROL OF THE
HOUSE.
00:07:29>> THE DEMOCRATIC CAUCUS OF
WHICH MY OPPONENT WAS A PART
00:07:31MADE THE COLD, CALCULATED
DECISION THAT IN 2010, THEY WERE
00:07:33GOING TO HOLD ON TO POLITICAL
POWER, THEY WERE GOING TO RUN
00:07:35THE APPORTIONMENT BOARD.
SO THEY KILLED REFORM IN THE
00:07:37CRADLE.
I THINK IT'S A LITTLE
00:07:39HYPOCRITICAL FOR HIM TO BE OUT
NOW, HAVING FOUND THAT OLD--TIME
00:07:41REFORM RELIGION.
>> BUT CARNEY SAYS HE WASN'T IN
00:07:46HOUSE LEADERSHIP AND HAD NO
CONTROL, BUT SAYS YOST COULD
00:07:48HAVE DONE MORE AS A MEMBER OF
THE BOARD THAT APPROVED THE
00:07:50STATE LEGISLATIVE MAP.
>> THIS IS A RED HERRING THAT
00:07:52MR. YOST LIKES TO THROW OUT.
HE IN FACT DID HAVE THE POWER TO
00:07:55VOTE 'NO' ON THESE VERY PARTISAN
DISTRICTS, CHOSE NOT TO DO THAT,
00:07:57VOTED IN FAVOR OF THEM, AND
THAT'S WHY WE HAVE PEOPLE IN
00:07:59OFFICE WHO ARE ENCOURAGED TO BE
PARTISAN INSTEAD OF BIPARTISAN.
00:08:05>> AND THEN THERE WAS THE SHOW
ON THE LAST FULL WEEK OF
00:08:07SEPTEMBER THAT WAS INTENDED TO
PROFILE THE CANDIDATES FOR
00:08:09TREASURER, REPUBLICAN INCUMBENT
JOSH MANDEL AND DEMOCRATIC
00:08:11CHALLENGER CONNIE PILLICH.
MANDEL DECLINED THE INVITATION
00:08:13TO APPEAR ON THE SHOW.
BUT PILLICH TOOK THE
00:08:15OPPORTUNITY, SAYING HER OPPONENT
HAS BEEN MORE FOCUSED ON HIS
00:08:17POLITICAL CAREER THAN THE
TREASURER'S OFFICE.
00:08:19MANDEL AND PILLICH BOTH HAVE
MILITARY BACKGROUNDS MANDEL IN
00:08:21THE MARINES AND PILLICH IN THE
AIR FORCE, AND BOTH ARE LAWYERS,
00:08:24THOUGH PILLICH ALSO HAS AN MBA.
MANDEL SAID IN ONE OF HIS FEW
00:08:31INTERVIEWS, BEFORE THE EDITORIAL
BOARD OF THE PLAIN DEALER AND
00:08:33THE NORTHEAST OHIO MEDIA GROUP,
THAT THE STATE'S FINANCIAL
00:08:35RANKING, WHICH HE NEVER
SPECIFICALLY DEFINES, WENT FROM
00:08:3743RD IN THE COUNTRY TO 7TH UNDER
HIS LEADERSHIP.
00:08:39BUT PILLICH SAYS THOSE NUMBERS
ARE FROM STUDIES THAT DON'T HAVE
00:08:41ANYTHING TO DO WITH ONE ANOTHER.
>> JOSH MIGHT AS WELL HAVE COME
00:08:46IN HERE AND SAID, 'WELL, WE USED
TO HAVE 43 APPLES AND NOW WE
00:08:49HAVE SEVEN ORANGES.
LOOK AT THE IMPROVEMENT.' IF I
00:08:52HAD MADE THAT KIND OF ANALYSIS
IN BUSINESS SCHOOL, I WOULD HAVE
00:08:54BEEN LAUGHED OUT OF THE
BUILDING.
00:08:57HE'S TERRIFIC AT CITING NUMBERS
THAT HAVE NOTHING TO DO WITH THE
00:09:00TREASURER'S OFFICE OR ANYTHING
HE DID.
00:09:05>> MANDEL HAS BEEN ASKED
REPEATEDLY ABOUT WEALTHY
00:09:07BUSINESSMAN BEN SUAREZ, WHO WAS
ACQUITTED OF ILLEGAL CAMPAIGN
00:09:09CONTRIBUTIONS TO MANDEL.
MANDEL WAS NEVER ACCUSED IN THE
00:09:12CASE, BUT ADMITS HE MET SUAREZ
AT SUAREZ' NORTH CANTON HOME,
00:09:17THOUGH HE SAYS HE DOESN'T
REMEMBER WHAT WAS DISCUSSED.
00:09:20MANDEL TOLD THE PLAIN DEALER
EDITORIAL BOARD THAT HIS OFFICE
00:09:23DID SEND A LETTER TO OFFICIALS
IN CALIFORNIA BECAUSE HE WAS
00:09:25CONCERNED ABOUT JOBS AT SUAREZ'
COMPANY, BUT THAT NOTHING
00:09:30IMPROPER OR ILLEGAL WAS DONE.
BUT PILLICH SAYS SHE'S NOT SURE.
00:09:35>> ONE DOES WONDER HOW HE COULD
NOT REMEMBER A MEETING WITH A
00:09:38MAN WHO GENERATED $100,000 TO
HIS CAMPAIGN, THAT LED TO AN FBI
00:09:42INVESTIGATION, A CRIMINAL
INDICTMENT, TRIAL AND
00:09:47CONVICTION, AND HE HAD TO RETURN
THE MONEY, AND IT WAS THE
00:09:50SUBJECT OF MUCH PRESS FOR MONTHS
AND MONTHS AND MONTHS.
00:09:53IT'S A LITTLE SURPRISING THAT HE
CAN'T REMEMBER, BUT HIS
00:09:55MOTIVATIONS ARE HIS.
>> AND FINALLY, THE MAJOR PARTY
00:10:06CANDIDATES FOR GOVERNOR SAT DOWN
FOR EXTENDED ONE-ON-ONE
00:10:08INTERVIEWS.
DEMOCRATIC CANDIDATE ED
00:10:10FITZGERALD WAS THE GUEST FOR THE
FIRST SHOW IN OCTOBER, AND FOR A
00:10:12CANDIDATE WHO HAS BEEN BEHIND BY
DOUBLE DIGITS, WHO'S HAD SEVERAL
00:10:13CONTROVERSIAL MISSTEPS AND WHOSE
FUNDRAISING HAS BEEN DISMAL, HE
00:10:21SOUNDED LIKE HE WAS INDEED
CONTINUING A FULL-ON CHARGE
00:10:23AGAINST REPUBLICAN INCUMBENT
JOHN KASICH.
00:10:25FITZGERALD SAID KASICH HAS CUT
MONEY TO SCHOOLS WHILE DEMANDING
00:10:27MORE OF THEM, SUCH AS WITH THE
THIRD GRADE READING GUARANTEE.
00:10:29HE SLAMMED KASICH FOR RAISING
SALES TAXES AND FOR THE TAX CUTS
00:10:33THAT HE SAYS FAVOR THE WEALTHY.
BUT FITZGERALD SAID IT'S NOT
00:10:37PART OF HIS PLAN TO TAKE THOSE
BACK.
00:10:54BUT LIKE KASICH, FITZGERALD SAID
HE WOULDN'T RELEASE A SPECIFIC
00:10:56FINANCIAL BLUEPRINT THAT HE'LL
PROMISE TO FOLLOW TO THE LETTER.
00:11:01>> WHAT I DON'T THINK YOU HAVE A
RESPONSIBILITY TO DO AS GOVERNOR
00:11:08IS INVEST IN EDUCATION.
>> SO YOU ARE SAYING WE WOULD
00:11:23NOT NEED A TAX INCREASE.
>> MY HOPE IS WE WOULD NEVER
00:11:36HAVE TO DO THAT. I HAVE BEEN
SUCCESSFUL FOR SEVEN YEARS DOING
00:11:45THAT, AND I HOPE I COULD BE AS
GOVERNOR TOO
00:12:06>> FITZGERALD BLASTED JOBSOHIO
AS AN UNDERREPORTED SCANDAL, AND
00:12:08SAID KASICH'S PROMISES ON JOBS
HAVEN'T BEEN KEPT BECAUSE OHIO'S
00:12:10JOB CREATION IS BELOW THE
NATIONAL AVERAGE.
00:12:12BUT WHILE HE SAID HE WOULD
PREFER THE TRADITIONAL MODEL OF
00:12:14AN ACCOUNTABLE PUBLIC AGENCY FOR
ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT, BUT SAID
00:12:16HE'S NOT SURE HE WOULD DISMANTLE
JOBSOHIO.
00:12:18BUT AS EXPECTED, FITZGERALD
WASN'T EAGER TO DISCUSS OTHER
00:12:20THINGS ABOUT HIS CAMPAIGN, SUCH
AS THE 2012 POLICE REPORT ABOUT
00:12:22BEING IN A DARK PARKED CAR EARLY
IN THE MORNING WITH A WOMAN HE'S
00:12:24NOT MARRIED TO AND THE
SUBSEQUENT REVELATION THAT HE
00:12:26DIDN'T HAVE A VALID DRIVER'S
LICENSE FOR A DECADE.
00:12:34>> I WANT TO ASK YOU IF YOU CAN
DIRECTLY EXPLAIN
00:12:39WHY YOU DIDN'T HAVE A DRIVERS'
LICENSE FOR 10 YEARS.
00:12:48>> IS THAT AFFECTING ANYBODY'S
LIFE?
00:12:59THE ANSWER IS NO.
>> FITZGERALD DISMISSED A LOT OF
00:13:10THE REPORTING ABOUT HIS CAMPAIGN
CONTROVERSIES AS "PEYTON PLACE
00:13:25GOSSIP STUFF" AND "SILLY" WHEN
COMPARED TO ECONOMIC CRISES HE'S
00:13:27HEARD FROM PEOPLE HE'S TALKED
TO.
00:13:29AND HE SAID HE'S BEEN TRYING TO
SPEAK UP FOR PEOPLE WHO HAVEN'T
00:13:31BEEN REPRESENTED IN THE LAST
FOUR YEARS.
00:13:39>> I'M PROUD OF WHAT WE'RE
TALKING ABOUT
00:13:43ACROSS THE STATE.
WE REMAIN HOPEFUL AND COMMITTED.
00:13:55>> AND FITZGERALD WAS ANGRY
ABOUT NOT HAVING AN OPPORTUNITY
00:14:03TO DEBATE KASICH.
WHEN I SPOKE TO THE REPUBLICAN
00:14:04INCUMBENT, IT WAS AFTER A
CAMPAIGN EVENT IN CINCINNATI, AT
00:14:06THE STUDIO AT CET.
HE WAS RELAXED AND AFFABLE, EVEN
00:14:08WHEN ASKED ABOUT THE ANGER
THAT'S BEEN BUBBLING UP AROUND
00:14:11HIS REFUSAL TO DEBATE.
>> WE OFFERED A COUPLE OF DEBATE
00:14:20OPPORTUNITIES, WHICH THEY
REJECTED
00:14:24AND THEN THE OPPORTUNITY WENT A
WAY.
00:14:32THEN WE RECIEVED AN ULTIMATUM,
WHICH WE DON'T RESPOND WELL TO.
00:14:43>> KASICH WON'T MENTION
FITZGERALD BY NAME AT ALL,
00:14:53SAYING CAMPAIGNS ARE ALWAYS
ABOUT THE INCUMBENT.
00:14:55AND AFTER REPEATED QUESTIONS
ABOUT THE ARGUMENTS HIS CRITICS
00:14:57HAVE THROWN AT HIS POLICIES,
KASICH DISMISSES THEM THIS WAY.
00:15:06KASICH TALKED UP HIS POLICIES ON
EDUCATION, AND HE FIRMLY
00:15:08CONNECTED EDUCATION TO JOBS.
>> OHIO HAS GAINED JOBS DURING
00:15:16YOUR TIME IN OFFICE
AS EVERY STATE HAS.
00:15:24>> WE ARE RANKED 8TH IN THE
COUNTRY IN TERMS OF JOBS
00:15:34CREATED. WE WERE 48TH AND NOW
WE'RE 8TH.
00:15:41IN THE MIDWEST, WE'RE RANKED
NUMBER 2.
00:15:53WE STILL HAVE A LONG WAY TO GO,
BUT THIS IS SUCCESS.
00:16:02>> AND KASICH SAID OHIOANS'
WAGES ARE GROWING FASTER THAN
00:16:09THE NATIONAL AVERAGE.
KASICH ONCE AGAIN DEFENDED
00:16:11JOBSOHIO, WHICH HAS BEEN
VILIFIED BY CRITICS FOR A LACK
00:16:13OF ACCOUNTABILITY AND
TRANSPARENCY, AS THE MOST
00:16:16TRANSPARENT PRIVATE ORGANIZATION
IN THE STATE.
00:16:17KASICH DEFENDS HIS TAX CHANGES
BY NOTING HE'S ADDED AN EARNED
00:16:19INCOME TAX CREDIT AND RAISED THE
PERSONAL DEDUCTION FOR
00:16:21LOW--INCOME TAXPAYERS.
HOWEVER, THERE IS ONE TAX HIKE
00:16:24HE VOWS TO GET AN INCREASE ON
OIL AND GAS DRILLERS.
00:16:26AND IT WON'T BE THE ONE THAT
PASSED THE REPUBLICAN-RUN OHIO
00:16:34HOUSE.
>> IT'S A JOKE.
00:16:42THESE COMPANIES ARE PAYING $.20
ON A $100 BARREL OF OIL.
00:16:50WE WOULD HAVE THE LOWEST
SEVERANCE TAX IN AMERICA AND WE
00:16:53WOULD USE SOME OF THAT TO HELP
LOCAL PEOPLE FIX THEIR ROADS AND
00:16:57THE REST WOULD GO TO CUTTING
INCOME TAXES TO EVERYONE ELSE IN
00:17:01THE STATE.
AS JOHN PAUL JONES SAYS, I HAVE
00:17:03NOT YET BEGUN TO FIGHT, BUT WE
CANNOT LET THESE COMPANIES TAKE
00:17:08VALUABLE STUFF OUT OF THE STATE
AND NOT PAY FOR IT.
00:17:11I FEEL VERY PASSIONATELY ABOUT
THIS.
00:17:15>> ON SO-CALLED RIGHT TO WORK
LEGISLATION, K-6 SAID " IT ISN'T
00:17:20WORTH TALKING ABOUT BECAUSE THE
RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN MANAGEMENT
00:17:26AND LABOR IS GOOD."
HE ALSO SAID HE HAS NO MORE
00:17:29RESTRICTIONS HE'D LIKE TO SEE ON
ABORTION RIGHTS, AND INSTEAD
00:17:31WANTS TO CONCENTRATE ON LOWERING
THE INFANT MORTALITY RATE.
00:17:33AND KASICH SAID HE NOT ONLY
SUPPORTS TRADITIONAL MARRIAGE,
00:17:35BUT HINTS THAT HE'D OPPOSE AN
EFFORT TO OVERTURN THE STATE'S
00:17:42BAN ON SAME-SEX MARRIAGE IF IT
COMES TO THE BALLOT.
00:17:45AND AS FOR THE 2016 BALLOT
KASICH SAID THE PRESIDENTIAL
00:17:47RUMORS FLATTER HIM, BUT HE
DOESN'T FIGURE HE'LL BE MOVING
00:17:49OUT OF OHIO.
YOU CAN SEE ALL THE INTERVIEWS
00:17:51WITH THE CANDIDATES AND MY
CHATS WITH THE CHAIRMEN OF THE
00:17:53OHIO REPUBLICAN PARTY AND THE
OHIO DEMOCRATIC PARTY AT OUR
00:18:00ARCHIVES ON THE OHIO CHANNEL'S
WEBSITE AND AT
00:18:04IDEASTREAM.ORG/OHIO.
A REMINDER, WE WILL HAVE LIVE
00:18:12ELECTION NIGHT COVERAGE STARTING
AT 10:00 ON TUESDAY, NOVEMBER 4
00:18:17ON MOST OF OHIO'S PUBLIC
TELEVISION STATIONS.
00:18:19AND NOW, A DEPARTURE FROM
POLITICS FOR A MOMENT - WITH A
00:18:24TRIP BACK IN TIME.
MANY PEOPLE IN CENTRAL OHIO AND
00:18:26IN FACT, ACROSS THE COUNTRY
FONDLY REMEMBER THE KAHIKI
00:18:28SUPPER CLUB, A COLUMBUS LANDMARK
FOR NEARLY 40 YEARS.
00:18:30IT'S BEEN GONE FOR 14 YEARS,
DEMOLISHED NOT LONG AFTER IT WAS
00:18:32CLOSED IN 2000.
BUT MEMORIES OF THAT RESTAURANT,
00:18:35WITH ITS WAITRESSES IN GRASS
SKIRTS, TORCHES LIT WITH ACTUAL
00:18:38FIRE, AQUARIUMS ON THE WALLS,
TROPICAL BIRDS, ITS FOUNTAIN IN
00:18:41THE FOYER AND THE
POLYNESIAN-LOOKING HUTS OVER
00:18:49SECTIONS OF THE DINING AREA ARE
STILL FRESH IN MANY MINDS, AND
00:18:51LIVE ON IN MANY PEOPLE'S
PICTURES OF MILESTONES SUCH AS
00:18:53ANNIVERSARIES, BIRTHDAY PARTIES
AND OTHER EVENTS.
00:18:56I TALKED WITH TWO OF THE AUTHORS
OF THE NEW BOOK "THE KAHIKI
00:19:13SUPPER CLUB
A POLYNESIAN PARADE IN
00:19:15COLUMBUS", DAVID MEYERS AND HIS
DAUGHTER ELISE MEYERS WALKER.
00:19:17THEY'VE WRITTEN SEVERAL
HISTORICAL BOOKS, INCLUDING ONE
00:19:19ABOUT THE OLD OHIO PENITENTIARY.
MEYERS SAYS THE IDEA FOR THIS
00:19:21BOOK CAME WHEN JEFF CHENAULT AND
DOUG MOTZ, WHO JOINED THEM IN
00:19:27CO-AUTHORING THE BOOK, URGED
THEM TO WRITE IT.
00:19:34>> IT WAS THEN I STARTED TO
APPRECIATE THAT IT WAS REALLY AN
00:19:38ICON OF TAHITI CULTURE.
I STARTED LOOKING THROUGH
00:19:45WEBPAGES AND REALIZING THAT NOT
ONLY WAS THERE AN APPEAL
00:19:49LOCALLY, THERE WAS A NATIONAL
INTEREST AS WELL.
00:19:51>> I THINK YOU HIT ON IT WHEN
YOU SAID IT SOMEWHAT LONG GONE
00:19:56AND A LOT OF PEOPLE DON'T
REMEMBER IT.
00:19:58WITH THIS BOOK AND OUR PREVIOUS
BOOK, I AM AMAZED.
00:20:02I REMEMBER ALL THREE OF THESE
EVEN THOUGH I AM VERY YOUNG.
00:20:06WE WILL BE OUT TALKING TO PEOPLE
AND THEY WILL SAY THAT WAS HERE?
00:20:10I HAD NO IDEA.
I HAD NO IDEA WE HAD ANYTHING
00:20:14LIKE THOSE LONG GONE
INSTITUTIONS.
00:20:16THAT'S PART OF IT.
WE WANT THERE TO BE A RECORD
00:20:20SINCE THE BUILDINGS ARE GONE.
THIS WAS A UNIQUE RESTAURANT IN
00:20:28MANY WAYS THE COST $1 MILLION TO
BUILD IN 1961, WHICH WAS A HUGE
00:20:29AMOUNT OF MONEY.
HAWAII BECAME A STATE IN 1959.
00:20:36THIS OPENED IN 1961.
IT WAS AN INTERESTING TIME.
00:20:41THERE ARE ITEMS FROM IT IN THE
OHIO HISTORICAL SOCIETY, WHICH
00:20:45IS FASCINATING.
WHAT HAPPENED THAT IT ENDED UP
00:20:47GETTING TORN DOWN AND MADE WAY
FOR A CHAIN DRUG STORE?
00:20:51WAS IT THE LOCATION, THE SCENE,
THE CYCLE OF NOSTALGIA?
00:20:54>> WITH RESTAURANTS, IT IS
ALWAYS LOCATION, LOCATION,
00:21:01LOCATION.
THEY COULD NOT MOVE IT EASILY.
00:21:02>> IT WAS HUGE.
500 GUEST, 20,000 SQUARE FEET.
00:21:06>> RIGHT.
AND IN THE HEYDAY, THERE WAS A
00:21:15COUNTRY SHOPPING CENTER AND
DESERT IN ACROSS THE STREET.
00:21:17THERE WAS A LOT OF SOCIAL
ACTIVITY GOING ON AND THEY COULD
00:21:20TAKE ADVANTAGE OF THAT.
THAT WAS A DESTINATION PART OF
00:21:23TOWN.
UNFORTUNATELY, IT STARTED TO
00:21:28DECLINE RATHER PRECIPITOUSLY AND
, TAHITI BEING A HUGE STRUCTURE
00:21:36THAT WAS BUILT PRIMARILY OUT OF
WOOD, IT REQUIRED A LOT OF
00:21:40UPKEEP AND THEY DIDN'T HAVE THE
MONEY TO KEEP PUTTING BACK INTO
00:21:43IT, SO IT WAS GOING TO TAKE SOME
SIGNIFICANT CASH TO BRING IT UP
00:21:47TO STANDARD.
AT THE SAME TIME, AND SALES AT
00:21:52FLATLINED.
PEOPLE WERE BECOMING WARY OF THE
00:21:53NEIGHBORHOOD BECAUSE THE
BUSINESSES AROUND IT WERE ALSO
00:22:01DECLINING.
>> THIS WAS WHITEHALL ON THE
00:22:03EAST SIDE OF COLUMBUS.
IN THE MIDDLE OF THE AREA
00:22:07BETWEEN DOWNTOWN AND THE OUTER
BELT.
00:22:08>> RIGHT.
JUST BEFORE YOU GET TO
00:22:11WHITEHALL.
>> THERE HAVE BEEN SOME CRIME IN
00:22:13THE PARKING LOT AROUND THE
RESTAURANT, NOT DIRECTLY RELATED
00:22:18TO THE RESTAURANT, BUT SOME
THEFTS AND BREAK-INS.
00:22:20>> I WANT TO ASK YOU ABOUT
PICTURES AND THE THINGS THAT ARE
00:22:23IN THE BOOK.
IT'S A FUN BOOK TO LOOK AT JUST
00:22:27TO SEE ALL THE PICTURES.
FOR PEOPLE WHO DON'T KNOW, THEY
00:22:32HAD WAITRESSES IN GRASS SKIRTS,
TORCHES LIT WITH ACTUAL FIRE,
00:22:37FLAMING DRINKS, AQUARIUMS ON THE
WALL, A WHOLE RAIN FOREST.
00:22:40A HUGE FOUNTAIN IN THE MIDDLE,
TROPICAL BIRDS, AND ALL OF THIS.
00:22:46IT WAS AN AMAZING EXPERIENCE
OVERALL.
00:22:49HOW DID YOU GET ALL THE PICTURES
AND INFORMATION ABOUT THIS?
00:22:52THIS WASN'T AN HISTORIC LING
UNTIL THE 1990'S, SO THERE MIGHT
00:22:58NOT HAVE BEEN A LOT WRITTEN
ABOUT IT.
00:23:02>> THE BUILDING WAS LATER PUT ON
THE REGISTER OF NATIONAL
00:23:06HISTORIC BUILDINGS.
IT'S KIND OF RARE FOR THIS
00:23:08BUILDING BECAUSE IT WAS SO
MODERN.
00:23:10NORMALLY, A BUILDING HAS TO BE
MUCH OLDER TO MAKE THE REGISTRY,
00:23:17BUT BECAUSE OF THE UNIQUE
ARCHITECTURAL ASPECTS, THE
00:23:20DECISION WAS MADE TO ADD IT.
AND THERE WAS A LOT OF GREAT
00:23:23INFORMATION, DESCRIPTIONS OF THE
BUILDING AND THAT SORT OF THING.
00:23:27AS FOR PHOTOS, THIS IS WHERE WE
REALLY HIT THE JACKPOT WITH OUR
00:23:32CO-AUTHORS.
BOTH JEFF AND DOUG HAD A HUGE
00:23:34PERSONAL COLLECTION AND ALSO,
THEY WERE INVOLVED IN THE
00:23:41NOSTALGIA COMMUNITY.
ANYTHING THEY DID NOT HAVE.
00:23:45THEY COULD COLLECT.
-- DID NOT HAVE, THEY COULD
00:23:51COLLECT.
WE WERE FORTUNATE TO BE ABLE TO
00:23:54MEET WITH THE ORIGINAL OWNERS.
THEY GAVE US FULL ACCESS TO WHAT
00:23:58THEY HAD LEFT.
THAT WAS AMAZING.
00:24:00WE HAVE THE ORIGINAL JOB
APPLICATION CARD IF YOU WANTED
00:24:06TO WORK THERE.
BASICALLY, WHAT IS HER NAME,
00:24:10WHAT IS YOUR PHONE NUMBER, WHAT
IS YOUR SHIRT SIZE?
00:24:15IT WAS NOT AN IN-DEPTH
OBLIGATION, BUT HE HAD IT TUCKED
00:24:19AWAY IN A FILE AND WE WANTED TO
USE IT.
00:24:20>> WE'LL HAVE MORE FROM THIS
INTERVIEW WITH DAVID MEYERS AND
00:24:23ELISE MEYERS WALKER ABOUT THEIR
BOOK ABOUT THE KAHIKI NEXT
00:24:25MONTH.
AND THAT'S IT FOR THIS WEEK.
