Governor's Awards for the Arts

The Governor's Award for the Arts winners are chosen for outstanding contributions to the arts statewide, regionally and nationally. Ohio is a state with a wealth of individual artists, individuals and institutions that are supportive of the arts; for that reason, the award process is highly competitive. Sponsored by the Ohio Arts Council.

Momentum 2010: Ohio Women's Summit

The Governor's Office for Women's Initiatives and Outreach and First Lady Frances Strickland host "Momentum 2010: Ohio Women's Summit," a statewide forum to discuss and promote the status of Ohio women and girls in the areas of economics, education, and health. Held on International Women's Day at the Vern Riffe Center in Columbus, the event addresses topics ranging from access to higher education, women and leadership, violence against women, and the advancement of women in science, technology, engineering and math careers. The summit aims to help women with strategies to lead healthy, safe and financially-stable lives, as well as enhance collaboration among women and women's organizations. A diverse range of speakers will participate in Momentum 2010, including Governor Strickland, First Lady Frances Strickland, Pulitzer Prize winner and Cleveland Plain Dealer columnist Connie Schultz, philanthropist Mavis Leno, and diversity and inclusion expert Audra Bohannon. Valerie Jarrett, White House senior adviser and assistant to President Barack Obama for Intergovernmental Affairs and Public Engagement, will serve as the keynote speaker for the event. Jarrett also serves as chair of the White House Council on Women and Girls.

Ohioana Book Festival

The Ohioana Book Festival, a program of the Ohioana Library Association, exists to showcase the talents of Ohio's authors, increase awareness of their contributions to the literary arts, and to celebrate and encourage the love of reading and writing.

Reforming Ohio's Education System For the 21st Century

Starting in late July 2008, Governor Ted Strickland will host 12 "Conversations on Education Reform" throughout every region of Ohio. The conversations will focus on the seven principles for education reform the governor laid out in his state of the state address as well as specific policy ideas for making Ohio's schools among the best in the world. At each town hall meeting, Governor Strickland will give local citizens the opportunity to share their thoughts and ideas on creating a system of education that is innovative, personalized and linked to economic prosperity in Ohio. The meetings will be broadcast on local PBS stations and streamed live on the Web. Local citizens and educators not attending the event will gather for watch parties and discussions in response to the Governor's meetings.

Remarkable Ohio

The Ohio Historical Markers identify, commemorate and honor the important people, places and events that have contributed to the state's rich history. The Ohio Historical Markers Program, administered by the Ohio Historical Society, is a vital educational tool, informing residents and visitors about significant aspects of Ohio's past.

Spotlight : Riffe Gallery

The Ohio Arts Council's Riffe Gallery showcases the work of Ohio's artists and the collections of the state's museums and galleries. The Riffe Gallery is located in the Vern Riffe Center for the Government and the Arts, across from the Statehouse on High Street in Downtown Columbus.

State of the State Address

The annual address presented by the Governor of Ohio, highlighting the goals and accomplishments of the state. Held as a joint session of the Ohio General Assembly in the House Chambers of the Ohio Statehouse.

Veterans Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony

This annual event recognizes inductees to the Ohio Veterans Hall of Fame, which has inducted more than 560 veterans since its inception in 1992. Each year, an executive committee, made up of representatives from Ohio's veterans organizations, selects 20 inductees from applications received from across the state and nation. Our inductees are leaders in a variety of areas including business, entertainment and education. Most importantly though, they all have made significant impacts on their communities. Inductees into the Ohio Veterans Hall of Fame served their country honorably in a branch of military service and continued to serve their communities, state and nation after discharge.
