Columbus Metropolitan Club - 4-7-2021 - Trends That Will Shape US - Our Region's Future

The first in a series of discussions over the next several months, CMC will examine trends that were affected by the pandemic and others that were well underway. We'll look at trends in development, business, technology, healthcare, transportation, energy, arts, and other areas that shape our lives and lifestyles.

Columbus has been one of the fastest growing regions in the country for decades. We all know the narrative: Columbus is 500 miles from three-quarters of the nation's population. It's home to one of the country's largest universities, seat of state government, in the middle of one of the nation's most diverse states with agriculture and rural land thriving side-by-side with large urban centers. The state has vast resources of fresh water, a strong work force and extensive logistics networks. This the picture, but it's a static one that looks at the current conditions of what we are. But, what trends are shifting that potential will shape our region for the future? How will remote working affect employees' ability to live anywhere? How will mid-sized, more affordable cities like Columbus fare if workforce is reshuffled away from densely-populated and expensive cities? Are we positioned and actively pursuing opportunities the pandemic presented to us?

Featuring Kenny McDonald, President and CEO, One Columbus, Jack Marchbanks, Ph.D., Director Ohio Department of Transportation, Harvey Miller, Ph.D., Professor of Geography and Director, Center for Urban and Regional Analysis, The Ohio State University, with host, Doug Buchanan, Editor, Columbus Business First.
