Part I provides an overview of women's opportunities in sport and education from the late 1800s to the Association of Intercollegiate Athletics for Women (AIAW), the passage of Title IX and the NCAA assumption of control over women's intercollegiate athletics. The AIAW v. NCAA lawsuit, effects of merging women's and men's athletics programs, and positive consequences of Title IX are discussed. Stories of women involved in athletics prior to Title IX provide powerful evidence of women's passion for sport and competition.
