Toledo Stories - Fort Meigs

This nationally-important fort, located in northwest Ohio on the banks of the Maumee River, played a crucial role in the War of 1812. Built by General William Henry Harrison to defend the Ohio Country against British invasion, Fort Meigs constitutes the largest wooden walled fortification in North America.

British and Canadian forces, assisted by Native Americans under Tecumseh, besieged the fort twice in 1813, but the 10 acre log enclosure with seven blockhouses, five cannon batteries and numerous earthworks presented a formidable defense. With two failed attempts, the British finally retreated.
