Program Description
Celebrating Ohio's Seniors: The Ohio Department of Aging's Elder Caregiving Awards & Ohio Senior Citizens Hall of Fame
May 22, 2008
The Ohio Senior Citizens Hall of Fame honors older Ohioans for the vital role they play in society. Individuals selected for induction embody the productivity and enjoyment that should be a part of every person's retirement years.
The Elder Caregiving Award symbolically honors the thousands of Ohio caregivers who lovingly take care of family and friends day after day.
Elder Caregiving
More than seven million Americans help older persons live in the community, despite limitations on their own daily activities. In addition to adult children caring for their aging parents, aging parents care for their adult children with disabilities. In every community across Ohio, you will find unique caregiving situations that involve people of all ages.
Each year, Ohio caregivers contribute more than a billion hours of unpaid help to others. The cumulative value of this care exceeds $12.1 billion in Ohio alone. Nationally, the value is more than $306 billion.
Family members and other informal caregivers are the backbone of our long-term care system. We recognize the value of their commitment and honor them for the work they do to make Ohio a better place for families.
Ohio Senior Citizens Hall of Fame
We honor outstanding older Ohioans for their personal achievements and contributions to others; for the roles they play in their communities, state and nation; and for what they do to promote productive and enjoyable lives beyond retirement.
This year, 12 individuals enter the Ohio Senior Citizens Hall of Fame. They were selected for outstanding contributions toward the benefit of humankind after age 60, or for a continuation of efforts begun before they turned 60.
Since 1977, more than 300 individuals have been inducted into the Ohio Senior Citizens Hall of Fame.
