I love the detail of the Girl Scout uniforms of the 50s, which emphasize identity and uniformity. Girl Scout uniforms have evolved along with fashion and culture, now with greater selection and emphasis on individuality, yet maintaining group identity through color and symbol. Johnny Appleseed is my favorite Ohio legend and the subject of a popular mealtime grace sung at Girl Scout camp. For nearly a century Girl Scouts have learned to appreciate and to serve their community, following in Johnny Appleseed's footsteps in some respects. Indeed times change, but basic commonalities connect our past, present and future, too. (AL00040)
