Dry Electrodes for Cardiovascular Disease Management and Prevention
Cleveland, OH – Orbital Research, Inc. has developed a unique, cost effective, disposable dry electrode for use in long duration and ambulatory Electrocardiograph (ECG) applications. Called the ORI F6T Dry ECG Monitoring Electrode, it requires no electrolytic solution or gel to conduct the bio-electrical signal from the skin's surface through the electrode.
The monolithic design of the F6T consists of a sensing electrode, housing and snap as a single unit. In addition, a state-of-the-art adhesive patch secures the electrode to the skin and eliminates aggressive skin preparation required by gel based electrodes.
Instead of using a gel as a conductive solution, the surface microstructure of the F6T mechanically forms a connection between the skin the electrode. This connection facilitates the transmission of ECG signals and reduces motion artifact.
The dry electrode enables longer continuous periods of ECG capture and is a critical component of ECG studies to reduce health care costs by transitioning observations from the hospital to the home.
Patient Comfort
The F6T is comfortable for the patient. The electrically conductive "micro anchors" connect with the outer layer of skin. There is no need for aggressive skin preparation. Electrode function is improved and signal quality is maintained regardless of the type or duration of testing activity.
The circular, adhesive patch is a thin, breathable tape that allows vapor to escape from the skin's surface. The transparent tape maintains the skin's natural pH and allows dermatological evaluation throughout the wear period.
F6T Benefits
The F6T offers significant advantages over gel based electrodes. The dry electrode provides an opportunity to expand the length of time an electrode can be comfortably worn, in some cases longer than a week.
The dry electrode continuously captures clean, high quality signals for extended lengths of time.
The dry electrode is durable and displays a longer shelf life over gel based electrodes.
And, because of its long life and durability, it can reduce health care costs by moving hospital observation to the home.
Testing, Approvals and Patents
Independent studies conducted by Cleveland's Metro Health System and Cleveland State University have confirmed that the F6T is safe for high resolution ECG applications. In addition, the product has been cleared for use by the Federal Food and Drug Administration as a Class II medical device.
The dry electrode has been recognized for its uniqueness with four patents, three patents pending and two in progress.
