Teachers in Ohio will often spend their own money to outfit their classrooms with supplies, books, and learning devices.
And as costs rise and budgets decrease, teachers are turning to online fundraising, or crowdfunding. These online fundraisers are similar to booster clubs or concession booths; they're bringing in outside funds to support educational opportunities.
DonorsChoose.org, a popular teacher crowdfunding website, has raised money for more than a million projects since 2000. In Ohio alone, there are currently 900 initiatives on the website.
However, there could be negative consequences to this revenue model, according to a new report from Ohio Auditor Dave Yost. The state office recommends school districts adopt policies that regulate the use of online fundraising.
Today on All Sides we discuss the growth of online fundraising and outside money coming into and helping students in Ohio.
