00:00:12
The lower level of the building is called the Crypt and houses
00:00:15
the Ohio Statehouse Museum, a variety of historical displays
00:00:20
and artifacts, as well as offices and work areas.
00:00:24
Originally it would have been a dark and dirty place,
00:00:27
taken up with coal-fired boilers that kept the building warm
00:00:30
during the winter months.
00:00:32
There was also a confusing maze of storage areas that
00:00:36
became increasingly crowded through the years.
00:00:40
The gracefully arching curves of the ceiling in the Crypt
00:00:43
are beautiful to look at and highly functional.
00:00:46
The arches form strong load-bearing vaults that support
00:00:49
the great weight of the building above.
00:00:52
The Statehouse is constructed much like an ancient castle
00:00:55
or cathedral, with load-bearing stone walls.
00:00:59
The metal girders that would form the skeleton
00:01:01
of a modern building are not used here.
00:01:04
Instead, the building is composed of locally quarried
00:01:07
limestone bricks made on the jobsite from local clay,
00:01:11
and cast-iron trusses to support the roof.
