Description
The Lincoln Vicksburg Monument was sculpted by Thomas Dow Jones of Cincinnati between 1865 and 1871. It memorializes both the assasinated president and also those who made sacrifices during the Civil War. Grant, McPherson and Sherman were Union leaders from Ohio who were involved in the siege at Vicksburg. The sculpture is made from marble. The quote is from Lincoln's second inaugural address. This monument is housed in the Ohio Statehouse Rotunda.

00:00:11The large and impressive marble sculpture that occupies
00:00:15the southeast corner of the Rotunda is a monument
00:00:18both to the slain 16th president of the United States,
00:00:21Abraham Lincoln, and those who fought in the Civil War.
00:00:26The artist who created the piece was T.D. Jones.
00:00:29Jones was an Ohio resident of Welch heritage
00:00:33who completed the bust of Lincoln from life,
00:00:35one of the few likenesses that the president actually posed for.
00:00:40It is reported that Lincoln was very pleased with the result.
00:00:44The sculpted panel on the main body of the monument shows
00:00:47the scene during the surrender at the Battle of Vicksburg.
00:00:51It may seem odd to memorialize a military action that took place
00:00:55in Mississippi here in the Ohio Statehouse,
00:00:59but Vicksburg had great importance.
00:01:02From a military standpoint, it was a highly strategic victory
00:01:06for Union forces, marking a real turning point in the war.
00:01:10Also, the Union leadership at this battle, generals
00:01:13Grant, McPherson and Sherman, were all born in Ohio.
