Description
The Grand Stair Hall, located in the Senate Building, is made of white marble and is one of the most impressive spaces in the Statehouse. The ceiling contains detailed murals which surround a skylight containing a Seal of Ohio made of stained glass. The four murals, painted by Pedretti & Sons of Cincinnati, each picture a woman representing art, justice, manufacturing, and agriculture, respectively. The Grand Stair Hall also features gold and aluminum leafing. While the space appears to contain a large amount of this type of decoration, the building only contains about three ounces of gold. The Senate Building is home to 31 of the Ohio's 33 senators; the Senate President and Senate Minority Leader both have offices in the Statehouse.

00:00:14Surrounded by brilliantly white marble,
00:00:17you are standing in one of the most impressive spaces
00:00:19in the Capitol Square complex.
00:00:22It is enclosed by a ceiling of detailed murals,
00:00:25which surround a stained-glass Great Seal of Ohio skylight.
00:00:30Before the massive renovations during the 1990s,
00:00:33it was not known that there was a skylight in this space
00:00:36because it had been covered from the inside and outside
00:00:40with pieces of plywood.
00:00:42Restorers speculate that the skylight had been covered
00:00:45because it was in such a state of disrepair that it leaked
00:00:48and might possibly fall out. It has since been repaired and secured.
00:00:54As you gaze upward, you'll notice the murals on the ceiling
00:00:57of the Grand Stair Hall.
00:01:00These four murals represent art, justice, manufacturing, and agriculture.
00:01:06Each painting shows a woman holding various related objects.
00:01:13Also used for decoration in the Senate Building
00:01:13is gold and aluminum leafing.
00:01:16Although the gold leafing appears to be quite prevalent,
00:01:19there are only slightly more than three ounces of gold in the building.
00:01:24Today, the Senate Building is home to 31 of Ohio's 33 senators.
00:01:32The Senate President and Senate Minority Leader
00:01:35both have offices in the Statehouse.
