Remarkable Ohio
Description
Groveport is home to a lock on the The Ohio and Erie Canal which was constructed from 1830-1831.
Lock number 22 is a 117 feet long and ten feet deep and has a sixteen foot wide channel and was made out of sandstone.
The lock was built to raise and lower canal boats to meet the changing landscape.
The canal helped feed commercial and population growth in Groveport area in the 19th century.
The Ohio and Erie Canal provided a fast and reliable form of transportation to move people, and goods to and around Ohio.
By 1900, boat traffic on the canal ceased entirely.
