00:00:50>> The Republican National
Convention is now over, and it's
00:00:52made history in many ways.
The convention opened on Monday
00:00:55afternoon with the usual
fanfare, and a little bit of
00:00:58controversy, as the people
behind the so-called "Never
00:01:01Trump" movement tried and failed
to change the rules and allow
00:01:05each delegate to vote their
conscience instead of the way
00:01:07they were pledged to vote.
In some cases, that would have
00:01:10run counter to state laws.
But the motion was shot down,
00:01:14and some delegates booed and
raised their fists, while others
00:01:17stormed off the floor as Trump
backers chanted their support.
00:01:24That was a very public glimpse
into the division within the
00:01:26Republican Party over Trump.
And it was very evident in the
00:01:31Ohio delegation, which is
pledged to John Kasich but has
00:01:34some members who say it's time
to get behind the nominee.
00:01:36But for some, the Trump campaign
is making it difficult.
00:01:40On the first day of the
convention, the Ohio delegation
00:01:42met for a breakfast session to
hear from state Treasurer Josh
00:01:46Mandel and Arkansas senator Tom
Cotton.
00:01:49At the same time, Trump campaign
spokesman Paul Manafort was on
00:01:51national media, saying Governor
Kasich was being "petulant" and
00:01:57was "embarrassing his party in
Ohio" by not endorsing Trump.
00:01:59That brought responses on
Twitter from Kasich's campaign
00:02:03spokesman John Weaver and angry
tweets from Ohio Republican
00:02:06Party chair Matt Borges, who
took to Twitter to say that
00:02:09Manafort "still has a lot to
learn about Ohio politics,
00:02:12doesn't know what he's talking
about, and to tout Kasich's
00:02:21approval rating.
Later that night as he came off
00:02:22the convention floor, Borges,
who also leads the Ohio
00:02:24delegation, still seemed
steamed.
00:02:25>> Everybody makes mistakes.
They made a big mistake.
00:02:27It was a stupid one.
People make mistakes and can
00:02:29recover from mistakes.
WE'LL SEE IF THEY DO
00:02:34>> That hinted at the rift
between Trump and Kasich, which
00:02:36only appeared to grow as the
week wore on.
00:02:37Kasich spent all day Tuesday in
northeast Ohio, but none of that
00:02:42TIME AT THE Q.
The governor started with a
00:02:48breakfast with Michigan
delegates in Cuyahoga Falls.
00:02:49>> Our party has to be in the
long term, and in the median and
00:02:51short term, unifying a lifting
and a hopeful party, and it's
00:02:58going to be great challenge
between republicans and
00:03:00democrats.
Third party won't work cause
00:03:02there is no infrastructure to
it.
00:03:04But that party that can
enunciate, enunciate the hopes
00:03:10and dreams and the unity is the
party that's going to do well
00:03:13and with changing demographics,
we can't keep talking to the
00:03:15same old people.
Because there is not enough of
00:03:18us to talk to.
It just won't work.
00:03:21>> The Michigan delegation had
told journalists there would be
00:03:24a chance to talk to Kasich after
the speech, but as reporters
00:03:28assembled around a mic stand to
WAIT FOR HIM, THE GOVERNOR LEFT
00:03:34OUT THE SIDE DOOR.
He then traveled to an economic
00:03:38policy forum in downtown
Cleveland, then to a hot and
00:03:40packed reception at the Rock and
Roll Hall of Fame where Kasich
00:03:42talked a bit about the last days
of his presidential bid.
00:03:47>> We left the race abruptly,
and the reason why we did is
00:03:52that I became convinced that in
one way or another, to go
00:03:55forward I would have to tell
people things that I didn't
00:03:58think were true.
I couldn't reconcile that, and
00:04:04secondly, I did not want to lose
that message.
00:04:09I felt it was so important that
the message of what we need to
00:04:13do as a nation is far more
important than John Kasich.
00:04:17>> The next whirlwind stop took
Kasich across the riverfront in
00:04:20Cleveland to a talk before the
US Hispanic Chamber of Commerce.
00:04:24It was at that event, with a
small crowd and only a few
00:04:28cameras rolling, that Kasich
made his most detailed remarks
00:04:30yet about why he had no
intention of dropping by the
00:04:34convention that he worked to
bring to Cleveland.
00:04:37>> In a political campaign, and
maybe it's because I've had a
00:04:46number of them, what you say is
should be what you mean.
00:04:49>> I'm just disappointed that
message didn't take hold, but
00:04:50that doesn't mean I give up my
message.
00:04:54I am thrilled to be in
Cleveland.
00:04:56I'm having the time of my life.
It's just not for me to go to
00:04:59that because that's not where I
think I need to be.
00:05:02>> Kasich also said he had been
thinking about the future, now
00:05:05that he knows he won't be moving
into the White House.
00:05:07Saying that he doesn't know
where he's going or what he's
00:05:10going to do, but that he will
serve out the rest of his term
00:05:14and, as using a footrace
analogy, "run through the tape
00:05:16really fast".
But Kasich also said he's
00:05:21uncertain about the future of
the GOP.
00:05:22>> I think when the election is
over, I believe the Republican
00:05:25Party -- those members of the
Republican Party, there's no
00:05:29party, it's not like there's
some place you go you know to
00:05:32find out what the Republican
stuff is.
00:05:34But I think that those who are
Republicans are going to have to
00:05:36sit down.
We are going to have to think
00:05:39about what our party is going to
mean to people in the 21st
00:05:42century and if we miss that
opportunity, it'll be a big
00:05:44mistake.
>> Kasich commented Tuesday just
00:05:49as Donald Trump secured the
nomination during the roll call
00:05:53floor vote at the q, but Kasich
said he hadn't planned it that
00:05:55way.
Ohio's 66 delegates all were
00:05:58pledged to Kasich, but he wasn't
there to see them cast for him.
00:06:03Some former presidential
contenders said they were
00:06:05disappointed that Kasich
wouldn't speak at the
00:06:06convention.
Former Texas Gov. Rick Perry
00:06:10said if he were the governor, he
would be at the convention and
00:06:13that Kasich should be there, and
former US House Speaker Newt
00:06:17Gingrich said his friend Kasich
was "being silly" for skipping
00:06:19the convention.
And complicating the whole
00:06:23squabble story was a report that
surfaced this week saying Trump
00:06:26had asked Kasich to be his
running mate back in May, right
00:06:28after Kasich left the race.
No response to that from the
00:06:32governor, who canceled an
appearance before the
00:06:35Pennsylvania delegation on
Wednesday and then avoided
00:06:38questions on Thursday at a
breakfast with the Ohio
00:06:44delegation.
But Donald Trump sounded off -
00:06:46tweeting out that "John Kasich
was never asked by me to be
00:06:48V.P."
Concerns about how Kasich has
00:06:50been handling this were brought
into sharp focus by, somewhat
00:06:53surprisingly, Texas Sen. Ted
Cruz, who left the presidential
00:06:57race just hours before Kasich
did after the Indiana primary in
00:06:59May.
Cruz took the convention stage
00:07:04on Wednesday for a speech in
which he did NOT endorse Trump,
00:07:07and then the next day took
questions from the Texas
00:07:10delegation live on television.
But Akron-area state Sen. Frank
00:07:14LaRose says he stands behind
Kasich's decision.
00:07:19>> I think it's the classy thing
to do, if you don't have
00:07:21something nice to say about the
nominee don't show up on stage.
00:07:29>> THEY AGREED THE CANDIDATES
NEEDED TO FOCUS THEIR FIRE ON
00:07:34PRESUMPTIVE DEMOCRATIC NOMINEE
HILLARY CLINTON.
00:07:39>> WE'RE GOING TO MOVE FORWARD
IN THAT MANNER.
00:07:43DON'T HOLD BACK.
GO OUT AND SUPPORT OUR ENTIRE
00:07:47TICKET.
WE NEED TO WIN THIS YEAR AND
00:07:49OHIO WILL BE THE KEY TO THAT.
>> While Kasich has been
00:07:56avoiding the Q, fellow Ohio
Republican US Sen. Rob Portman
00:07:57has stopped by a few times to
visit with the state delegation.
00:07:59Portman said he was aware of the
squabble over anti-Trump
00:08:00proposals that saw some
delegates walking out in
00:08:02protest, but then returning to
the floor later.
00:08:05>> My sense is that there were
some differences of opinions
00:08:09aired, but maybe that will mean
now going forward people have
00:08:12had the chance to make their
views known and we can move
00:08:14ahead as a party.
>> Portman is on the ballot this
00:08:17fall, in a tough race with
Democratic former Gov. Ted
00:08:20Strickland.
He was not on the RNC convention
00:08:24speakers' list, though he has
endorsed Trump.
00:08:28Ohio's delegates are public
officials, party leaders and
00:08:31people who've worked tirelessly
to help Republican candidates.
00:08:34Though there are only 66
official delegates, there are
00:08:38dozens of alternates and
honorary delegates at the
00:08:41convention and the activities
surrounding it.
00:08:44Media outlets reported that some
members of the Ohio delegation
00:08:46were disappointed that they
didn't get to spend more time
00:08:49with Kasich, since so many of
CAMPAIGNED FOR AND RAISED MONEY
00:08:56FOR HIM.
BUT EVERY DELEGATE I SPOKE TO
00:08:59WAS PROUD TO BE THERE FOR
KASICH.
00:09:03even though some have
transitioned to supporting the
00:09:04party's official nominee.
Kennison Saunders is a delegate
00:09:06from Gallipolis, and this was
his first convention.
00:09:10>> TRUMP IS MY CANDIDATE.
WHILE EVERYONE MIGHT NOT AGREE
00:09:14WITH THIS, OUR DELEGATION, BUT I
AM A TRUMP CANDIDATE.
00:09:19I WILL BE VOTING FOR TRUMP AS
OUR CANDIDATE.
00:09:22WE HAVE TO BEAT HILLARY.
WE HAVE TO.
00:09:24>> THERE ARE A LOT OF STORIES
ABOUT PARTY UNITY AND@@
00:18:17WE'RE SPIES, WE'RE TRYING TO
FIGURE OUT WHAT'S GOING ON LIKE
00:18:19THE OHIO DELEGATION, WAS IT
TUESDAY NIGHT?
00:18:21THIS WAS TUESDAY NIGHT.
HALF OF THEM WERE GONE, LIKE
00:18:24HALFWAY THROUGH THE DEAL.
WHAT WAS THAT ALL ABOUT?
00:18:28>> ALONG MEDIA ROW AND WITHIN
THE REPUBLICAN PARTY, THERE ARE
00:18:33PEOPLE WITH DIFFERENT POINTS OF
VIEW SHARING THEIR IDEAS DURING
00:18:36THIS CONVENTION.
BUT IT'S EASY TO FORGET WITH ALL
00:18:38THE ACTIVITY GOING ON
Even more diverse voices
00:18:48sounding off outside.
Each day this week, the
00:18:50Democratic National Committee
has been holding press
00:18:51conferences and media calls with
DNC chair Debbie Wasserman
00:18:52Schultz.
>> We heard a lot of anger, a
00:18:54lot of yelling but no substance
just empty rhetoric and divisive
00:18:55language.
The long, discredited attacks
00:18:59yesterday were only interrupted
by the chaos, disorganization
00:19:01and mismanagement of the
Republican National Convention.
00:19:04>> These daily events featured
Ohio candidates this fall such
00:19:07as former Governor and US Senate
candidate Ted Strickland, along
00:19:11with Congressmembers Marcia
Fudge of the Cleveland area, Tim
00:19:13Ryan of Youngstown and Joyce
Beatty of Columbus.
00:19:16And the last day, Democrats were
joined by high profile Senators
00:19:19Cory Booker of New Jersey and Al
Franken of Minnesota.
00:19:22And of course, there were plenty
of protestors, from anti-war
00:19:25groups, Black Lives Matter,
Anonymous and other mostly
00:19:29progressive causes and groups,
though there were a few
00:19:32counterprotestors who showed up,
sometimes armed.
00:19:35The demonstrations stayed mostly
near to downtown Cleveland's
00:19:38Public Square, which is three
blocks away from the Q.
00:19:47Some protests started as marches
down city streets, including one
00:19:49the night before the convention
started, as delegates were
00:19:51arriving.
Police arrested a few dozen
00:19:55people, but for the most part,
the protests were loud and
00:19:57peaceful.
Delegates, pundits and other
00:20:01experienced convention goers
noted over and over how
00:20:04different this convention was.
One major difference is the
00:20:08number and types of media
outlets covering the RNC.
00:20:11There were 15,000 journalists,
producers and other media folks
00:20:15credentialed for this
convention.
00:20:17So many of them that an adjacent
parking garage was converted
00:20:20into a multi-suite studio to
house many of the reporters and
00:20:23pundits and their crews.
WE CALL IT MEDIA ROW.
00:20:30My colleague at ideastream, Rick
Jackson, looked into the new
00:20:31media that came to this
convention.
00:20:36>> LONG BEFORE DONALD TRUMP TOOK
THE STAGE TO ACCEPT THE
00:20:39NOMINATION OF THE REPUBLICAN
PARTY, AMERICANS WERE HAVING
00:20:42PLENTY OF CONVERSATION ABOUT
HIM.
00:20:44RANGING ACROSS THE MANY
PLATFORMS OF SOCIAL MEDIA.
00:20:47WHO BETTER TO CATALOG IT ALL

00:21:44AND WITHIN ABOUT HALF AN HOUR,

00:24:47Some local, but others came from
as far away as California to
00:24:51sell Republican branded
t-shirts, purses, jewelry, hats,
00:24:53art and other memorabilia.
One piece of disappointing news
00:24:59for Ohio political junkies this
week was Wright State University
00:25:03in Dayton, pulled out of hosting
the first presidential debate in
00:25:07September, citing rising
security costs.
00:25:12There were estimates that the
tab could go as high as $11
00:25:14million, when the university has
expected only about $5 million.
00:25:17Hofstra University will now host
that debate on September 26.
00:25:21And that's it for this week.
