Medical quackery isn't new.

Cloaking the industry in the idea of wellness doesn't change the fact that consumers are routinely fooled into spending on everything from supplements to trendy diets.

Christy Harrison is an author, podcaster and registered dietician. Her new book is titled The Wellness Trap: Break Free From Diet Culture, Disinformation, and Diagnoses, and Find Your True Well-Being.

The U.S. Preventive Services Task Force makes evidence-based recommendations about all sorts of medical screenings, behavioral counseling, and medications for primary care providers.

And the evidence shows that not only is breast cancer the most common cancer among women in the U.S., but that more women are getting it younger.

That means earlier screening could save more lives. And the task force has recommended starting at age 40.

Dr. Carol Mangione is chief of the Division of General Internal Medicine and Health Services Research at UCLA, and is co-author of the new recommendation.

She is a former Chair of the U.S. Preventive Services Task Force, an independent, volunteer panel of national experts in disease prevention and evidence-based medicine.

The Food and Drug Administration last week ended blood donor restrictions for gay and bisexual men.

The ban started during the AIDS epidemic, but has long since been criticized as unnecessary by medical professionals and gay rights advocates.

Ayako Miyashita Ochoa is an adjunct professor at the UCLA Luskin School of Public Affairs and is co-director of the UCLA Hub for Health Intervention, Policy, and Practice.

She wrote about the issue in The Conversation.
