Applause - "Harvey Pekar's Cleveland" and Comic Book Artist Mike Gustovich

Singer Doris Long

Doris Long has been a fixture in the Cleveland Jazz since the early 60's. In all that time there's one thing that she's never done-release an album. On this episode of Applause, she performs in our Westfield Insurance Studio Theater, and explains why her first CD is "Long Overdue."

"Harvey Pekar's Cleveland"

The late writer Harvey Pekar might have appreciated Doris Long's perseverance, AND her long overdue recording, because HIS work often celebrated the world's underdogs. A graphic novel Pekar was working on at the time of his passing demonstrates that very quality. IN the recently published book, "Harvey Pekar's Cleveland" the writer shares the history of two underdogs: himself, and the city he loved, defended, and often took pot shots at.

Comic Book Artist Mike Gustovich

Like writer Harvey Pekar, artist Mike Gustovich knows a few things about the struggles of "underdogs." Mike grew up reading about characters who seemed to have it all, but who rarely found true happiness. Not among the pages of "classic" literature, but rather through the panels of "comic books." Today, Mike Gustovich has turned his love of superheros into a career as comic book writer and illustrator.
