Columbus Metropolitan Club - Denvy A. Bowman, Ph.D, President of Capital University

Denvy A. Bowman, Ph.D., was inaugurated as fifteenth president of Capital University on October. 7, following a unanimous vote last March by the university's Board of Trustees. Bowman had served as interim president since June 2006.

The university's website reads, "The vote was the culmination of a months-long research and interview process completed by a special, board-appointed task force and involving faculty, staff, student and alumni governing bodies, and advisory boards. The feedback made it clear that Bowman's collaborative leadership style, unwavering commitment to student- and academic-centered decision-making, and his vision have earned the collective respect and confidence of those he leads."

Capital set a growth agenda in 2002, but it was stymied by lower-than-budgeted revenues, leaving the university facing its first deficits in the school's history. After three years of loses, President Theodore Fredrickson resigned in May, 2006. The Board appointed Bowman as interim president where he was reportedly surprised by the budget he inherited. Instigating open budget reviews and strict scrutiny of every dollar spent, Bowman is leading the university back to a balanced budget expectation by the end of the current fiscal year in June.

Bowman will discuss "Private Universities: Purpose, Pressure and Perseverance" from his perspective as President of an institution founded in 1830, the oldest and one of the largest universities affiliated with the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America.
