Columbus Metropolitan Club - Predatory Lending or Land of Opportunity?

Ohio has the dubious distinction of being #1 in the country for home foreclosures. Some say that eager-to-live-the-American-dream families fall victim to "no money down," or tax deferred promotional schemes that hide costs and inflate mortgage values over the current market value of a home.
Others say that it's all legal and buyers should do their homework before committing to home ownership. Still others theorize that mortgage foreclosures are just a delayed reaction to years of Ohio's poor economy.

Many articles in The Daily Reporter and a recent Columbus Dispatch series, "Broken Dreams," revved up the issue in the legislature. A bill that would better protect homeowners is currently being considered (SB 185 introduced by Joy Padgett).

Tireless champion for the homeless, and Cleveland Plain Dealer 2003 Ohioan of the Year, Bill Faith is the Executive Director of the Coalition on Homelessness and Housing in Ohio (COHHIO). Informative, witty, politically savvy, Faith will explore the scope and possible solutions to what Attorney General Jim Petro calls, "a scourge on all Ohioans."

Recently returned from a tour of duty in Iraq, Senator Steve Stivers, 62nd District, has a background in the banking industry and brings a different perspective to the discussion. He is concerned that the legislation being considered will result in a rash of litigation arising and have an undeterminable impact on the secondary mortgage market.
Everyone who owns a home in Ohio or is thinking of buying a home has a stake in this conversation.
