Columbus on the Record - 18th Congressional District Debate

From Ohio's 18th Congressional District, Democratic Congressman Zack Space and his Republican challenger Bob Gibbs will debate at WOSU@COSI Studios. Mike Thompson will moderate.

Republican John Kasich is 10 percentage points up on the Democratic incumbent - 51 percent to 41 percent - in a Quinnipiac Poll. That's virtually identical to Kasich's lead two weeks earlier. "Obviously, as we get closer to Election Day, an awful lot of people already have made up their minds," said Peter Brown, assistant director of the Connecticut university's polling institute.

When President Obama came to the Cleveland area on Wednesday to tout a new set of economic proposals, Ohio Governor Ted Strickland did not think twice about appearing at the event, even as other Democrats locked in tight races have sought to distance themselves physically from the president.

A group against closed door meetings for Columbus City Council filed a complaint at the Ohio Elections Commission. The complaint centers around recent mailers sent by supporters of Issue 12 that voters will decide in November. The mailer reads "Issue 12 Means Accountability." The flyer says the amendment on the November ballot will bring Columbus in line with Ohio law for open meeting requirements. But a group called Keep Council Open that opposes Issue 12 says changing the city's charter to allow for closed door discussions for certain issues will make council less accountable for its actions.
