Columbus on the Record - Abortion Debate at the Statehouse

1. Ohio Public Employee Unions Fight for Survival

Signaling the war ahead, more than 800 firefighters, police, corrections officers and other public workers packed the Statehouse yesterday to display their opposition to a sweeping GOP-backed attempt to limit the power of public unions to negotiate pay and other terms of employment.

2. Are Ohio Public Employees Overpaid?

This paper investigates whether Ohio public employees are overpaid at the expense of Ohio taxpayers. The research is timely. Newly sworn-in Gov. John Kasich believes that public employees are overcompensated relative to private sector workers. He is promoting public employee pay cuts, changes in collective bargaining laws, major benefits reductions, and the elimination of interest arbitration for police and fire unions as key to reducing the Ohio's budget deficit.

3. Abortion Debate Resurfaces at the Statehouse

In a span of eight days, Ohio Statehouse Republicans will have introduced five separate bills aimed at restricting access to abortions, including a controversial measure banning the procedure as early as six weeks after conception.

4. Calls for Ohio to Withdraw from Health Care Lawsuit

Health Reform Supporters Calling on DeWine - business-journal.com
Supporters of the health-care reform legislation approved last year will participate in a phone bank at Mahoning County Democratic Party headquarters to urge state Attorney General Mike DeWine to drop what they characterize as his "frivolous lawsuit" seeking to repeal the legislation.

5. John Kasich and education reform

Making good on campaign promises, Republicans in the Ohio House are preparing legislation to repeal key elements of Ohio's school-funding setup, including a requirement that school districts offer tuition-free, all-day kindergarten. The bill's sponsor, Rep. Randy Gardner, R-Bowling Green, said he hopes the legislation to undo much of former Gov. Ted Strickland's evidence-based model will "send a strong message from Columbus that there is mandate relief and cost savings on the way as (district officials) plan for the next school year."
