Columbus on the Record - Kasich-Strickland Campaign Update

1. Kasich - Strickland campaign update

Acknowledging that fixing the next state budget will require "painful decisions," Gov. Ted Strickland said he will do all he can to protect education; at the same time, Strickland warned in the harshest terms used yet in the campaign that his Republican rival would balance the budget "with a lack of humanity."

John Kasich, the GOP nominee, dismissed Strickland's criticism as more "vitriol and attacks and smears," saying his approach to balancing the budget would be built around restoring prosperity to Ohio.

2. State Budget as campaign issue

Neither incumbent Gov. Ted Strickland nor former congressman John Kasich, the Republican nominee for governor, wants to acknowledge the elephant in the room, either. Both are likely afraid that telling voters of the sacrifices they'll have to make will cost the candidates votes.

3. Gingrich stumps for Kasich

Ohio gubernatorial candidate John Kasich addressed Dayton-area business leaders Thursday (July 15) about a job-retraining plan, bringing along a political heavyweight in former House Majority Leader Newt Gingrich.

4. Judicial campaign rules

A federal appeals court cleared the way for Kentucky judicial candidates to raise money and run with political party affiliations, but he ordered a lower court to consider whether the candidates can offer specific positions on issues. The decision could affect Ohio, where judicial candidates are barred from identifying a party affiliation after the primary election.

5. Congressional Races update

Plans to address the I-70/I-71 interchange have been released and are currently under review. Construction on this large-scale project is set to begin in late 2011.

7. Can casino tax windfall save Blue Jackets?

The trickle-down of tax dollars from Ohio's new casinos may become a revenue stream needed to help secure the Blue Jackets' future in Columbus.
