Ohio State has hired Brian Cummings as vice president for technology commercialization

For about a month, Gov. John Kasich has bemoaned the 63,000 job vacancies in the state. That number, according to the state's Department of Development, actually has climbed to about 80,000.

In a joint news conference yesterday featuring Kasich and Ohio State University President E. Gordon Gee, the governor said he will call on Gee and others to help fill those jobs.

Starlett Harrod of Oxford in Butler County had a simple, straightforward reason for joining more than 1,000 supporters of school choice who rallied outside Statehouse in Columbus on Tuesday: "They're our children."

Harrod, who home schools her children, said parents should have a choice in how their children are educated, an opinion echoed by U.S. Rep. Jim Jordan, R-Urbana, Secretary of State Jon Husted and other speakers.

House Republicans on Wednesday pushed through what could become the nation's most restrictive voter identification law, requiring Ohioans to show government-issued photo IDs at the polls.

More than three hours of fiery debate, following two hearings over eight days, netted a near-party line vote of 57-38 for the voter ID bill, which now heads to the Republican-dominated Senate. Rep. Kirk Schuring, from the Canton area, was the only Republican to join Democrats in voting against the legislation
