Lucas County Commissioner Pete Gerken hasn't had a serious reelection battle since he knocked off incumbent Harry Barlos twelve years ago. but this year he does. Former Toledo Mayor Mike Bell wants the job, and will be the Republican candidate in November. There will be a lot of focus this fall on who is likely to win. But beyond that - what is the job of a county commissioner these days - and are they giving the citizens what they need? Does the commission form of government need overhauling?
