NW Ohio Journal - Special Education Services October 30, 2008

Reportedly, 10 percent of children in Ohio and nationwide receive special education services. There are many issues of compliance with federal law and equity of funding between wealthy and poor school districts. A major issue is inclusion, or mainstreaming disabled students in schools.

Host Dr. Patrick Pauken, associate professor of leadership studies at Bowling Green State University, and guests discuss the issues facing special needs students today. How are these special needs students identified? What are the costs of special needs programs? What are the positive and negative implications of mainstreaming? Joining Pauken in the WBGU-PBS studio are: Dr. Mary Murray, assistant professor in the School for Intervention Services at Bowling Green State University, Dr. Greg Browning, a private researcher who conducted cost studies on funding for disabled children and Margaret Burley of the Ohio Coalition for the Education of Children with Disabilities.
