The State of Ohio - Late Night Budget Deal

The budget crisis is finally over after dragging on for months, and just in time for the holidays. A late night deal Wednesday shattered the impasse between Senate Republicans and Democrats. It was a deal that just enough Republicans and Democrats could agree on, and that the House Speaker would sign off on as well. And before the vote, Gov. Ted Strickland, who had been as adamant as anyone about what he wanted and what was off the table, sounded conciliatory and low-key.

The budget then hit the Senate floor, and though it may have been a done deal, lawmakers still had something to say about it, including Dale Miller (D-Cleveland), Sen. Bill Seitz (R-Cincinnati), Sen. Fred Strahorn (D-Dayton), Sen. Keith Faber (R-Celina) and Sen. Mark Wagoner (R-Toledo).

The budget hole was plugged in the House weeks ago. Since then House lawmakers have been working on other legislation while watching what's happening - or not happening - in the other chamber. Before lawmakers came to a deal late Wednesday, House Speaker Armond Budish and Minority Leader Bill Batchelder talked about what might have happened if the budget deal wasn't done.
