The State of Ohio - The State Budget Deficit December 11, 2009

The year is rapidly coming to a close, and the budget still has an 851 million dollar hole in it. Senate Republicans still refuse to support the 4.2% income tax cut rollback that Gov. Ted Strickland and House Democrats want, while the Governor and his Democratic colleagues will not go along with the reforms in state construction and prison sentencing guidelines that the GOP is after. And it became clear in a key committee meeting this week that there's a wide gap between the two sides.

So what now? Two two longtime watchers of Capitol Square answer that question. David Leland was a state lawmaker in the late 90s, and is the former chair of the Ohio Democratic Party. He was also senior advisor to Gov. Strickland's election campaign. Neil Clark is the former chief operating officer of the Ohio Senate Republican Caucus and was a program analyst for the Ohio Legislative Budget Office. He's been involved in several statewide and Congressional campaigns.

Ohio has become the first state in the nation to put a killer to death using a single drug instead of the three-drug cocktail that's been in use in 35 states for years. And though the execution of Kenneth Biros was delayed by an hour, his death turned out to be quicker than expected. The family of Biros' victim Tami Engstrom spoke emotionally about her murder and praised the execution team, as did prisons director Terry Collins. But Biros' lawyer John Parker is still concerned.
