Newsdepth - Endeavour; Kilauea Volcano

The weather made a mess all over Ohio last weekend. People had to fight their way out of snow banks and drifts. Mayors asked citizens to stay off the roads, but for those that had to go somewhere - there really wasn't much moving. The National Weather Service said the snow fall in Columbus reached 20.4 inches of snow. That broke the 1910 record of 15.3 inches.

In a rare night time launch the Space Shuttle Endeavour embarked on a mission that will bring two new components to the International Space Station in a joint effort with Japan and Canada. The mission of STS-123 includes five space walks, as Canada's two-armed robotic system Dextre will be put in place along with Japan's first contribution to the space station...a section of the country's new space research lab named Kibo, which means hope.

For 25 years, Hawaii's Kilauea Volcano has been spouting lava. Some people call it the most active volcano in the world. Now it's doing something that most people don't get to see - it's pouring into the ocean. It's a clash of fire and water - and it's amazingly beautiful.
Clouds of steam with beautiful hues of red, purple, and gold make it a mesmerizing sight.

The cost of fuel is the highest it's ever been. According to AAA, the average price of a gallon of regular fuel in Ohio rose this week to more than $3.30. That's forty cents higher than a month ago and eighty cents higher than the same date last year. And in Ohio, we're paying about a nickel more than the national average. But not as much as Hawaii - they're at about $3.61 per gallon!

It's safe to say that when cars first hit the road, the idea of built-in sound systems, air-conditioning, and safety airbags were the stuff of fantasy. These days they're often included as standard features. So what does the car of the future look like now? Max Foster has a sneak peek at the auto show in Geneva, Switzerland where we see a $2 million Bugatti, the incredible Morgan LifeCar, powered by hydrogen and able to go from 0 to 60 in 8 seconds, the underwater car we saw on NewsDepth a few weeks ago, and a car big enough for only a driver.

Take a few world-class musicians, add a compact family car, and you might be left with a rather unusual orchestra. Fionnuala Sweeney reports on a musical group where the instruments are part of a set that has come to be known as the Ford Focus Orchestra. Thirty one musical instruments built entirely out of bits of a Ford Focus, currently appearing in the European version of the company's latest commercial. They were designed and built in just four weeks by sound designer Bill Milbrodt and his team.

An Ohioan is flying high this week as a member of the Space Shuttle Endeavour crew. Navy Captain Mike Foreman, whose hometown is Wadsworth, is making his first spaceflight as Mission Specialist 2. Captain Foreman has a degree in aerospace engineering from the U.S. Naval Academy and has wanted to be an astronaut since he was a kid. Captain Foreman is scheduled to make three spacewalks on this trip.

Why not travel back to the Renaissance, as the Cleveland Museum of Art presents a special show called "Arms and Armor from Imperial Austria." It's on loan from one of Europe's largest and oldest armories. The exhibit has more than 200 pieces of armor and weaponry used to protect Austria from Turkish invaders in the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries. Armor was worn for protection - even horses wore the beautiful armor. But it was worn also for status, and some of the pieces show that they were created as highly-decorated art objects. The exhibit runs through June first.
