Over the weekend residents of Toledo were told not to use their tap water after treatment plant readings showed microcystin levels above the standard for consumption. The toxic peptides were traced back to algal blooms in Lake Erie. Researchers have long been studying what causes algal blooms not just in Lake Erie but all over the world - and how best to resolve the recurring issue.
